China's apparent consumption of copper in 2008 is expected to grow 8 percent over last year, said ZhaoBo, deputy director of the copper department of the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Association.
Zhao didn't provide the data of last year, but said slowing global economic growth has hurt the copper demand.
Copper analysts pointed out that it would be the first time in recent years that the copper demand growth rate would be below the output growth rate.
Zhao also said China's copper smelting output is expected to be more than 5 million tons in 2010.
