[ferro-alloys.com] Mogale Alloys plans to convert a small unused furnace from silicomanganese to medium-carbon ferrochrome. The furnace has a capacity of around 1,400 mtpm. If the conversion is successful, Mogale will convert an operating silicomanganese unit to medium carbon. Asenza and Uv?n Hagfors Teknologi were awarded a ZAR170-million contract to install and manage ferroalloy refining and granulation equipment at Mogale. The equipment would complement Mogale’s four existing furnaces, which produce low-phosphorus ferrochrome and low-phos silicomanganese and would, once completed, enable a significant portion of the current ferrochrome production to be converted to granulated medium-carbon ferrochrome.

The project will begin in July and the first production of specialty alloys is expected by the third quarter of 2014. Current production levels at Mogale Alloys would be maintained during the implementation phase.

Among the reasons for the conversion is that Mogale has its own supply of chromium feed but has to buy manganese feed.
