Spain-based ferro-alloys producer Ferroglobe has restarted one of the silicon metal furnaces at its Sabon plant in Galicia, with the company looking to take advantage of record high metals prices, sources in Europe told Fastmarkets.

Only one furnace at the Sabon plant has been restarted, the sources said, after the company shut production there a few weeks ago due to a spike in power prices in Spain, with silicon production one of the most energy-intensive sectors of heavy industry.

Ferroglobe has three furnaces at Sabon, each with nameplate capacity of about 14,000 tonnes per year. Typical output is around 10,000 tpy of a mixture of 4-4-1 and 5-5-3 grades of silicon metal, although trade sources estimated that total production is currently closer to around 20,000 tpy.

On Thursday, Fastmarkets approached the company for comment, but Ferroglobe officials had not confirmed the furnace restart at the time of writing.
