The Tata Steel has executed supplementary lease deed for its Sukinda Chromite Mine following approval of lease extension by the State Government.

The Sukinda Chromite Mine of Tata Steel is one of the seven non-captive mines which the inter-departmental committee on mines had recommended to the State Government for reopening on July 8.

The Government panel, headed by Development Commissioner UN Behera, had recommended five iron ore mines - RB Das’ Dalpahar Mine, Tarini Minerals’ Deojhar Mine, Gitarani Mohanty’s Malimunda Mine, TP Mohanty Mines and Putlipani Mine of Gandhamardhan Sponge Iron, and two Chrome Ore Mines- Sukinda Chromite Mine of Tata Steel and Kamarda Chromite Mine of BC Mohanty- for lease extension.

The remaining six mines do not have statutory clearances. Lease holders will be eligible for execution of supplementary lease deed only after obtaining requisite environmental clearance, approvals under Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, approved mining plan and consent to operate, official sources said.

Most of these mines come under the list of 102 mining leases whose operations were suspended following an order of the Supreme Court in May 2014. The apex court order was based on the report of the CEC (Central Empowered Committee).

Meanwhile, the Government has extended the lease period of 29 mines as per the Mines and Mineral (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2015 and 21 leaseholders have signed supplementary lease deeds for reopening their mines. Of 29 mines, operation of 26 leases which were operating as second and subsequent renewals without express orders of the Government was also suspended by the apex court.

Though the Government panel had taken up the iron ore mine of Mala Roy and Sons for consideration, it was deferred due to want of documents and necessary clearances.
