[Fellow]NEW DENR POLICY TO INTEGRATE BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION IN MINING OPERATIONS

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) is in consultations with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and other government agencies in drafting a new policy.  

The MGB, along with the DENR, its attached agencies and line bureaus, the academe and non-government organizations namely: Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB); Environment Management Bureau (EMB); Climate Change Service and Mining Concerns and Planning Policy Service; University of the Philippines (UP) Marine Sciences Institute; UP National Institute of Geological Sciences (UP NIGS); UP Los Banos College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR – UPLB); Protect Wildlife; and BioFin of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), are working on a policy that would integrate biodiversity protection and conservation, in mining operations.

The series of meetings and consultations are being spearheaded by the DENR and are supervised by DENR with Assistant Secretary for Mining Concerns Engr. Nonita S. Caguioa. It started last December at the Training Center of the BMB, with the latest meeting held last February 9, 2018 at the Sequoia Hotel, Quezon City. From there, drafts of the policy and its annexes have been made.

It is also planned that he said policy shall be subject to public consultations, prior to the signing of the DENR Secretary.

The Mine Safety Environment and Social Development Division (MSESDD) together with the Mining Tenements Management Division (MTMD) of the MGB provided technical support during the consultations with regard to environment protection and rehabilitation of mining; and mining tenements processing and approval.
