[Ferro-alloys.com]JSW Steel Ltd.may have to import 5 million-6 million metric tons of iron ore in the year from April 1, a person with knowledge of the matter said on Tuesday.
The move is a result of supply problems caused by mining bans in two important producing states.
"JSW Steel has imported very small quantities of iron ore in the past but given the supply issues we may have to step it up," the person said.
It could import ore for its plant in Karnataka state and another owned by subsidiary JSW Ispat Steel Ltd 500305.BY 0.00%in western India, the person said. The Karnataka factory produces 10 million metric tons of steel a year.
"JSW hasn't yet begun negotiations with any global iron ore suppliers," the person said adding South African ore is a possibility.
There is a partial mining ban in Karnataka state. The Supreme Court ban is to stop illegal mining and environmental damage. Some mines reopened in September.
