[Ferro-alloys.com] Bismuth prices firmed, and suppliers reported a pick up in sales volume. Spot prices were $8.60-8.80 per lb in the US, but Chinese traders reportedly raised their prices above $9 last week. Selenium prices held at $43-45 per lb, with moderate buying activity. Antimony prices, meanwhile, are stuck in Europe and the US because consumers are staying away from the market. Even in China, antimony prices are not moving in either direction.
Chinese indium prices rose last week. Consumer demand remains thin, but traders and investors reportedly are holding material off the market. Spot prices were 3,600-3,650 yuan ($580-588) per kg, VAT included. Some producers reportedly raised their offer prices to 3,680-3,700 yuan ($594-597) per kg, VAT included. An indium producer in Hunan province reported selling 1 mt of metal to an investor at 3,650 yuan per kg, VAT included.A jump in crude indium prices has been behind the runup in metal prices. Crude indium production, however, has been increasing since the end of the Chinese New Year, and market sources report that the supply tightness is easing. Last week crude indium spot prices were 3,300-3,400 yuan ($532-548) per kg, VAT included, up from 3,250-3,350 yuan per kg the previous week.
With domestic indium prices higher than in the West, China continues to be a net importer of indium, with 7,252 kg of imports in January vs. 70 kg in the same month of 2012. Imports were mainly 5,006 kg from South Korea and 2,017 kg from France. China did not export any indium in January.
Firebird Technologies, a wholly-owned subsidiary of 5N Plus, has entered into long-term supply agreements for germanium and indium feedstocks with Teck Metals, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tech Resources.
Under the terms of these agreements, Teck will provide germanium and indium feedstocks to Firebird for further processing. The agreements are the result of a memorandum of understanding announced in December 2009.
5N Plus President and Chief Executive Officer Jacques L’cuyer said, “Teck is one of the most important producers of indium and germanium worldwide, and we expect the stability of Firebird’s supply chain to be viewed as a differentiating asset by our customers.” Headquartered in Montreal, 5N Plus produces high-purity metals and compounds for electronic applications and provides recycling solutions.
