Global molybdenum production and usage rise in Q1 2025

[Fellow]Global molybdenum production and usage rise in Q1 2025

[Ferro-Alloys.com] Figures released by the International Molybdenum Association (IMOA) show that global production of molybdenum rose by 1% to 165.4 million pounds (mlbs) in Q1 2025 compared to the previous quarter. However, this represented a 7% rise when compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

Global usage of molybdenum in Q1 2025 rose 6% to 170.6 mlbs compared to the previous quarter, a 4% rise when compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

China remained the largest producer of molybdenum at 76.7 mlbs- a 3% rise when compared to the previous quarter, but a 9% rise when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. South America remained the second largest producer of molybdenum at 42.6 mlbs – a 4% fall when compared to the previous quarter but a 2% rise when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Production in North America rose 4% to 32.5 mlbs when compared to the previous quarter, a 15% rise when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Production in Other Regions fell 3% to 13.6 mlbs when compared to the previous quarter, a 6% fall when compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

China remained the largest user of molybdenum at 84.9 mlbs -an 8% rise when compared to the previous quarter, but a 13% rise when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Europe remained the second largest user of molybdenum at 28.7 mlbs - a fall of 1% when compared to the previous quarter or a 9% fall when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Use in Other Regions rose 2% to 23 mlbs, although this represented a decrease of 5% when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The USA saw the largest percentage increase in use, 18%, to 17.8 mlbs, an 8% rise when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Use in Japan increased by 8% to 11.6 mlbs when compared to the previous quarter, a 7% increase when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Use in CIS fell 3% to 4.7 mlbs when compared to the previous quarter, a 12% fall when compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
