[Fellow]Global ferrous scrap availability will reach 1 billion mt by 2030: Worldsteel

[ferro-alloys.com]Global availability of ferrous scrap will grow to 1 billion mt by 2030 from 750 million mt in 2017, the Head of Raw Material Markets at Worldsteel Association, Baris Ciftci, said in a blog.

Furthermore, the Worldsteel Association expected global scrap supply to reach 1.3 billion mt by 2050.

While moderate growth was still expected from developed countries in the EU, the NAFTA region and Japan, with scrap supply increasing from 320 million mt to 350 million mt by 2030, the biggest driver of new availability will be developing countries, spearheaded by China.

Worldsteel estimated that 300 million mt will become available in China by 2030 and 400 million mt by 2050, up from 200 million mt now.

In India and other Asian countries, scrap availability was also expected to double within the next 15 years.

"The strong growth in scrap availability suggests that in the medium and long-term we can expect the steel industry to increasingly replace natural resources by steel scrap, thereby conserving raw materials, energy, and reducing CO2 emissions," Ciftci said Wednesday.
