Xstrata produced 238,735 mt of refined lead and 235,616 mt of lead in concentrate in 2010 vs. 241,485 mt and 229,782 mt, respectively, in 2009.
Lead in concentrate production in 2010 was 3% higher than 2009 as a result of a 14% increase in volumes from the Mount Isa mines that more than offset the decrease in Brunswick production. Mount Isa produced 143,666 mt of lead in concentrate in 2010 vs. 126,227 mt the previous year. Refined lead metal production remained at a similar level to the previous year.
In 2010, Xstrata’s Northfleet, UK, smelter produced 153,453 mt of refined lead from Mount Isa sourced feed vs. 157,865 mt in 2009. The company’s Brunswick smelter produced 85,282 mt of lead vs. 83,620 mt in 2009. The smelter relied more on secondary lead feed. Lead in concentrate from its own mines accounted for 47,664 mt while other feeds were 30,056 mt in 2010 compared to 52,638 mt of primary lead concentrate and 20,118 mt of secondary feed in 2009.
Xstrata Zinc produced 765,867 mt of refined zinc in 2010 vs. 825,208 mt in 2009. The 7% drop in output from 2009 is a result of the permanent closure of the Kidd Creek zinc smelter in May 2010, partially offset by San Juan de Nieva smelter reaching full capacity during the year (50,119 mt in 2010 vs. 50,776 mt in 2009). Nordenham produced 145,943 mt of zinc in 2010 and 146,634 mt in 2009. Kidd Creek’s output in 2010 fell to 46,243 mt compared to 112,693 mt in 2009. Xstrata’s 25% share in CEZ contributed 72,562 mt in 2010 vs. 65,105 mt in 2009.
Zinc in concentrate production remained at a similar level to the previous year (1,022,252 mt in 2010 vs. 1,032,755 mt in 2009). Expansions and productivity improvements increased zinc in concentrate production by 10% at Mount Isa and McArthur River mines and by 3% at Perseverance mine. This was offset by lower production volumes at the Brunswick mine due to the change in its mining plan to extend its life into early 2013, and a planned reduction in zinc volumes at Antamina as the mine plan moved into a lower-grade zinc region.
