October 31, 2008 STEEL giant ArcelorMittal is shutting down furnaces at a dozen sites across Europe after sharp fall in demand from carmakers.

The furnaces would be for at least six months, ArcelorMittal said.

The move will slash output by up to 30 per cent at the Dunkirk, Florange and Fos-sur-Mer plants in France, as well as a site in Belgium, according to Michel Wurth, a member of the group's management board.

He did not name the other sites affected by the measures, which will run until at least March 2009.

Mr Wurth said the group was not planning any permanent layoffs but that the hundreds of staff left without work would be forced to take leave, register for training programs, or for temporary unemployment benefits.

ArcelorMittal has already announced an overall cut in production of 15 per cent.

French car maker PSA Peugeot-Citroen has ordered a 30 per cent production cut in response to a collapse in European sales while Renault is to temporarily shut down several factories in France and Europe as the global financial crisis undercuts the economy.
