Steelmaker ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India is setting up a temporary medical facility with around 250 beds, within its facility in Gujarat in order to supply Oxygen directly from its plants.

“Converting it to liquid form and filling it up in cylinder is time-consuming, with this move we can save time and treat people faster,” said the company’s CEO, Dilip Oommen to ET.

AM/NS will be opening the facility on Tuesday and the company is utilizing the land available within its premises in Gujarat. The company will be working with the Gujarat government to scale the number of beds to 500 - 1000 in the near term.

“Need of Liquid oxygen can be reduced drastically by administering patients closer to oxygen plants where gaseous oxygen is produced while obviously keeping the LMO for far off locations away from plants,” Oommen said.

The company will be arranging for doctors from the government hospital, and it will be open for all the patients in dire need of oxygen and medical care.

Apart from the medical facility the company has also ramped up its facility to provide 250 tonnes of oxygen from 210 tonnes a day and is importing 10,000 cylinders to supply to the government to transport liquid oxygen to other hospitals.

“We are also trying to convert the old cryogenic tankers used for transporting nitrogen into tankers for transporting oxygen,” Oommen added.

Reliance Foundation, the non-profit arm of Reliance Industries has committed to create, commission and manage 100 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds that will be made operational in phases from May 15, 2021.

"A team of more than 500 frontline workers comprising doctors, nurses and non-medical professionals will be deployed round-the-clock to oversee medical management of the patients,” the company said.
