On November 25, 2020, the European Commission passed the proposed draft of “European data governance regulation (data governance act)”, which will promote data sharing among Member States. This new way of data governance will increase the public's trust in data sharing, strengthen the mechanism management of improving data availability, and overcome the technical barriers of data reuse.
In order to shape the digital future of Europe, the EU has issued the new strategy for European industry, and is vigorously promoting the digital transformation project of the steel industry. As one of the most important scientific research funds in European steel industry, RFCs (coal and Steel Research Fund) includes 145 digital innovation projects in different fields, involving digital transformation and all aspects of industry 4.0 (such as adaptive online control, whole process optimization, synchronization of whole process data, zero defect manufacturing, traceability, intelligence and integration). The total budget of the fund is 250.1 million euros, with an average budget of 1.7 million euros per project.
The main research institutions participating in RFCs program are BFI in Germany, Swerea in Sweden, Rina in Italy, Sant'Anna in Belgium and metallurgical R & D center in Belgium. The most active steel manufacturers in RFCs projects are ArcelorMittal, ThyssenKrupp, Tata Steel and VAI. Metallurgical equipment manufacturers.
The digital transformation projects of the EU steel industry mainly categorized as the following 13: Internet of things (IOT), big data analysis and cloud computing, robot assisted production, production line simulation, self-organizing production, network physical system (CPS), intelligent supply network, horizontal and vertical integration, predictive maintenance, network security, improved maintenance services, automatic driving of logistics vehicles, digital knowledge management.
