Inner Mongolia is a national crucial production place of ferrous alloys and calcium carbide. In the recent ten years, it has undergone great changes in this industry. Ferrous alloys capacity increased to 7,000,000 tons last year from 500,000 tons in 2004 while calcium carbide capacity increased to 15,000,000 tons last year from 8,000,000 tons in 2004. And ferrous alloys output increased to 5,390,000 tons (one sixth of the national output) last year from 1,460,000 tons in 2004 while calcium carbide output increased to 8,400,000 tons (one third of the national output) last year from 3,000,000 tons in 2004. By 2014, ferrous alloys submerged-arc furnaces above 25,00KVA capacity accounted for 40% in Inner Mongolia when in 2004 there were only 125KVA furnaces on duty. By 2014, sealing type calcium carbide furnaces above 25,000KVA capacity accounted for 80% in Inner Mongolia when in 2004 less than 5%. FeSi unit power consumption was 8,268kwh/mt less than national limit of 8,800kwh/mt; MnSi unit power consumption was 4,292kwh/mt less than national limit of 4,400kwh/mt; Calcium carbide unit power consumption was 2,809kwh/mt less than national limit of 3,400kwh/mt.

Meanwhile, Ulanchap City is the main place to produce ferrous alloys in this region. In 2014, its ferrous alloys capacity reached to 3,620,000 tons, account for more than 50% in the region and has grown into an important sector.
