[Ferro-Alloys.com] The Pebble Mine project in southwest Alaska is an an open-pit copper and gold mine partnership which has run into controversy.

Pebble Mine is a 50-50 partnership between Anglo American and Northern Dynasty Minerals.
Its mineral deposits, which could be worth as much as half a trillion dollars, include an estimated 55 billion pounds of copper.

There are also 76 million ounces of gold, 3.3 billion pounds of molybdenum, and smaller quantities of silver, palladium and rhenium.

The mine is situated near water which contains a large salmon population.

As one of the world's most valuable habitats for the fish, which could be in danger if the mine receives its full licence.

Environmentalists are afraid the mine would generate tons of potentially dangerous waste material.

The US Environmental Protection Agency has already spent $2.4 million in reviewing the proposed project.
